Loane Coste

Time to get re-acquinted to Loane Coste. Back in 2010, she just used her first name as a moniker, a little later ‘Coste’ was added. So that she wouldn’t be confused with Louane. On this blog, Loane was first featured with a INXS-cover (HERE) in 2010, later on I posted more tracks.

Now, her new album L’Air de la nuit is out, on Kwaidan Records (home to La Feline, Mareva Galanter, Julia Jean-Baptiste and with Nouvelle Vague-mastermind Marc Collin as CEO). It’s, again, a sultry affair, with triphop-overtones, atmospherics & electronics, and some stellar husky singing.

This is a cool single off of that new album:

Older track:

Sasu, CdP

We don’t know her real name, or what she looks like. Thanks to her Instagram, we know she’s a painter, singer and composer. Sasu, for it is her, she plays the piano, speaks English, recorded in London and worked with Eric Najar, who also mixed this superhit. Her first single/song, is a tender lovesong. Sung by someone who’s slightly damaged, but still wants to go for it. Piano-based, in the same vein als Coeur de Pirate. Who also released a new single, a love letter to her eldest daughter. Honestly, I like the sasu track better.

Debbie Harry 80

Today, July 1, marks the 80th birthday of Deborah Harry, lead singer of Blondie. She sang sometimes in French, first hit ‘Denis’ has a French verse. This version of Sunday Girl is fully French ( ‘cept for the songtitle):

Naomi Greene

French-American harpist & singer Naomi Greene just released her new album Wounded Hero. There are three songs in French on that album, the most beautiful songs if you ask me. Very vulnerable. In this great interview, she says about Coeur Solaire: ‘[It] speaks to ephemeral summer loves in order to speak to personal emancipation and the thirst for freedom with playfulness. The harp melody builds with delicate melancholy towards the feeling of a blazing sun in the chorus. It’s about wanting to crack your heart open so wide that you could let the whole world in. It’s about wanting to love the entire world, limitless, without being tied down.’

Also very gorgeous, this French rework of the Italian classic L’Appuntamento by Ornella Vanoni (best known from the soundtrack of Ocean’s Twelve):

Amouë, Marine Quéméré

New singles by two bright young hopes of French pop. Both have a funky bass, a sunshine infection and of course a sultry voice. Nice Trip by Marine isn’t an English track, just so you know. Both tracks could’ve been selected for the Parfait été mix. No real clips yet.

Billie

Nepo-babies, sons and daughters of famed French musicians, we know a thing or two about that. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou Diollon, Vanille Clerc, Calypso Valois, they were all featured here. Billie’s dad is Mathieu Chedid, a.k.a. -M-. Her mom’s Céline Bary, who also sings, but mostly acts.

Billie’s first EP was released in January, and features new wave-popsong with a heavy, New Order-like bass. Mostly uptempo. But when she brings it down, it’s just gorgeous:

Vanille

Vanille (Canadian chanteuse Rachel Leblanc) released a new and VERY brilliant single this week. Of course, it’s full of retro vibes, and of course it’s a tearjerker about lost love: ‘Mais à quoi bon mourir seule dans cette vie aux mille pleurs?’ (But what’s the point of dying alone in this life of a thousand tears?). This is golden Filles Sourires material. Wrote about Rachel earlier, see.

Also this week, a new single by another Vanille was released, a French version of the bossa nova classic Aguas de Março Agua de Beber, written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, French lyrics by Pierre Barouh. This Vanille, actually called Vanille for real, is the daughter of famous French singer Julien Clerc.

But wait, there’s ANOTHER artist with the Vanille-moniker, also French, from Paris, I give you dj/producer Vanille Ferragu.

If you really dive into it, you’ll find even more Vanille’s. It’s a vanilla world people, we just live in it.

a2ele

From December 2024, this EP by a2ele (Adele). Recently heard a track on FIP Radio. A2ele is a French singer/producer who counts Mylene Farmer, Rihanna and Kate Bush among her favorites. She first released music via Soundcloud, now there are a handful singles and this EP. It’s mostly electronic, there are 80s synthpop references, it’s dreamy, sometimes danceable and always sweet. Try this:

Yzoula

Former La Femme-singer Yzoula takes a solo-trip (with help from producer Louis Fontaine) for these gorgeous retro-songs. Album coming up:

Spill Tab

The reason I missed previous spill tab hits, might be because the Thai-born, French-American singer only sang songs in English. But now, signed to Because Music (Charlotte Gainsbourg, Justice, Christine & the Queens), she debuts in French. Her new album, called Angie, contains at least two French songs. Assis is a spectacular slab of sultry soul, with a very cool Fender Rhodes piano solo:
