Happy Bastille Day!

It’s Quatorze Juillet and to celebrate I give you a couple of guys. With girls, added. First off is Ben L’Oncle Soul, who used to call himself Oncle Ben, until a brand of rice by one Uncle Ben protested. He’s signed by Motown France, and makes soul like Motown made back in the day. But in French. Most of the time. He debuted with an EP last year sporting just covers, Barbie Girl by Aqua and I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry. On his first album, there’s one cover (Seven Nation Army), the rest are brand new songs. I really like Soul Man, with those Motown-y drumrolls.
Radio Néo’s blog introduced me to Piero Moiolo, a singer-songwriter who played in ska-bands in the nineties, but now makes eloquent, charming folksy-songs (they compare him to both Joseph d’Anvers and -M-), the title track of his upcoming album Dans les squares en été is a terrific late summerevening song.
Finally Eric Belanger. From Quebec, yes, but no relation to Daniel Belanger. And no. he’s not this hockeyplayer. Eric’s a thoughtful singer-songwriter with a pretty voice. His new (second) album is just out, on which he duets with Marie-Andrée Landry. This song is a bonus track, but on his first album he kicked off with a gorgeous duet with the ultra-lovely Andrea Lindsay. Both songs are here. See a great animation video of Nous here.

Barbara

Guestpost! Vanessa on the movie Mademoiselle Chambon, and the song by Barbara that is used in the trailer (and the movie):

“In the film ‘Mademoiselle Chambon’, an enigmatic and refined schoolteacher enters the quiet life of a mason, cracking the surface of his simple and idyllic world. Everyday life for Jean (Vincent Lindon) means work, caring for an elderly father (Jean-Marc Thibault) and raising their son, Jeremy, with wife, Anne-Marie (Aure Atika). But when he meets his son’s new teacher, Mlle. Chambon (Sandrine Kiberlain) to discuss the boy’s work, something changes in him.

The difficulty of love between these two individuals creates a study of repressed passion and subtlety, of deep longing and missed opportunities.  Watch closely and you’ll sense that the chemistry between Lindon and Kiberlain seems real, perhaps because they were married but separated at the time of filming.

Barbara’s “Septembre (Quel Jolie Temps)” plays melancholically over the trailer that contains no dialogue.  The wistful strains of the song echo the conflict and desire between the two leads; they may be sharing a space but they’re careful to avoid each other.  The long quiet between them is near bursting with what they don’t say and what they can’t do.  On first listen, I thought the music came from two songs, which reminded me of the dual lives we sometimes have – the one the world sees us lead and the other that we wish we led.”

Poney Express

Remember Poney Express? Boys plus girl making countryrock with a French twist. This was their great ode to Paris. Imagine my surprise when I heard Palladium, a track from their upcoming new album. So synthesized, it sounds like an Alizée track. Or maybe more like Human League, because Martin Rushent produced. Ana and Robin added Michael from AS Dragon and Gerard from Vegomatic to the band. Another new track you can hear on Myspace is more in that country-folkish atmosphere – makes me very curious about that new cd, because I really like Palladium. Ana sounds sooo seductive.

La Naranja Mecanica

Unless you live under a rock, you probably know the Dutch football-team plays the World Championship final on Sunday. I won’t post any of the Dutch WC-songs (if you’re curious, click), but rather one of the best chansons ever about a Dutch footballplayer (from the 70s and 80s, but still).

Parfait Summer

HERE you can find a mix (download from where it says HIER) with my favourite French summer songs of this year (some released last year, but soit) , it’s a reaction to this mix made by my friend Norbert Pek, that I can also recommend (download that one from HIER). Some tracks you may know and not every track on my Parfait-mix is in French, just to show you how rich French music can be. Raul Paz comes from Cuba, the girl from Dinner at the Thompson’s is American and Pony Pony Run Run just like to sing and sound like a British band, I guess. Have fun on the autoroute du soleil, or wherever you may roam. (Yes, I know the title is grammatically incorrect, but the series is called Perfect …, so there)

Commercial Serge

Serge Gainsbourg appeared in quite a few commercials back in the day, there are a few on Youtube and other video sites like this one, this one and NOT this one. Probably the most famous ad he did was for Black & White whiskey. Here you can also download a song Serge and Jane made for after shave brand Caron. (Thanks Anna) EDIT: The Perrier-commercial was not made by Serge (see the comments). I googled some more, and found this one, probably the best commercial EVER with Serge in it (if you don’t get the joke, see this).

In other Gainsbourg-related news: meet Benjamin Paulin, who styled the cover of his first album after Serge’s debut-EP. His music refers to Leonard Cohen, MC Solaar and Serge of course. I’m crazy about the long (7 minutes) title track, that sounds like an updated inedit of Melody Nelson. See more here.

Summer songs (2)

Two pretty songs to let the sun shine in. But no singles. You can watch Brune in the video above sing N’oublie pas, from her recently released EP (featuring the fantastic Paris). But I chose for Rupture Song, in which she proves that French girls singing in English can be highly charming (as if we did not know this already).

The single for Annecy-born Loren Lopez‘ EP is British Attraction, a great video that shows her as France’s answer to Lily Allen and Kate Nash. But La Romance is a far better song, very sixties-oriented with a super-bassline.

Coeur de Pirate

Coeur de Pirate, aka Beatrice Martin, covers Air! We @ FillesSourires HQ we worship the ground she walks on ever since we fell really hard for her magnificent debut. For radio station NRJ CdP recorded an intimate session (with just a piano), featuring stripped songs from that debut and a remarkable cover of Air’s Playground Love, a song they recorded (with Phoenix-singer  Thomas Mars) for the Virgin Suicide soundtrack. See an interview with CdP about the session here, see a video of Ensemble here. Alas, the session is only available via iTunes France (soooo stupid), but thanks to J-P, here’s that Air-cover.

Allez la France

If you’re a football fan (no, it’s not soccer, it’s football), you probably witnessed the demise of the French national team. La fille du voison (the neighbour’s daughter) recorded several parodies, based on Stromae’s summer smash Alors on dance. The latest, Alors on perd (translates something like okay, so we lost) you can see above. This is the first one. This is Stromae’s original.

IN OTHER NEWS, I recorded several podcasts for Dutch internet-only station KX Radio. My show’s called Ongehoord Goed (Unheard Brilliance) and focusses on non-English pop- and rocksongs, from France, Spain, Brazil, Cambodia, Japan, Finland, etc. You can download the first two from here, and here. Yes, it is presented in Dutch, but the music’s universal, right? More to follow!
