Coeur de Pirate playing Golden Baby

A track from the upcoming album, live in the studio:

In other news: Beatrice/CdP’s singing a track (along with Carla Bruni, Emilie Simon, Olivia Ruiz and Jamie Cullum) on the Christmas-album by Michel Legrand. See full tracklist here

Claire!

Yes, we are partisan. Always were, in the six year this blog exists. You all know we have our prefered sweethearts. we’re on first name basis with ‘m: Camille, Charlotte, Beatrice (Coeur de Pirate), Coralie, Vanessa. And Claire. And because Claire has a new album, it is a happy day at Fillessourires. Us and Claire, it started in 2008 and continued in 2009 when her first, self-titled album came out.
And now there is a new album “Vagabonde”. Earlier this year we could see Claire has grown (duh!), as she showed in the catchy “Bang bang bang” (released on an EP in May) and in some sessions she did this year, like this one where she covers Big Mama Thornton.

And now there is “Vagabonde”. She continues to be our Claire, but she is older, more mature. It is clear that she’s studied the musical history, especially Americana (she lived in America, you know). The whole album sounds like an Americana album, sung in French, with “our” Claire’s husky voice, like in the new single “Rien de Moi” (also on the EP).
Was “Bang Bang Bang” a potential summer hit, the rest of the album is perfect for the upcoming autumn. No wait, autumn started already in July. With old whiskeys and/or good red wines and fireplaces…
For a teaser I decided to pick “34 Septembre” because that is a new song and it is in two weeks from now. Welcome Back, Claire!

Coeur de Pirate

Adieu is the new single by Coeur de Pirate. Listen here.
See the making-of-the-video-video here, and here also
And, if you dare, listen to CdP in a very, very bland duet with one David Usher here.

Caroline d’Été

Representing Granby (Quebec), Caroline d’Été won several chanson-contests before recording her debut-album (there was this EP also). Her lyrics are very poetic, her singing style is reminiscent of slammeurs like Luciole, though I wouldn’t call Caroline a slammeuse. To me, her music is very bass-driven, her voice floats on upright basslines, with added piano, drums and fx. There’s a triphop influence, I’m sure. I can understand why she supported Coeur de Pirate – though CdE sounds a tad more mature then CdP,  yet her voice has a smaller range. I wonder if CdE’s song Ton Morceau is about the time she worked in a Montreal record store.

Coeur de Peter

Peter Peter is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter who just released his first album, Homonyme. An interesting album, with some post-rock elements (he worked with a producer who also worked with Godspeed You! Black Emperor), nice ballads, subtle electronica and, more importantly, a duet with Coeur de Pirate. In French, yay! There’s another song with female backing-vocals, but my guess is this isn’t our Béatrice.

When Beatrice met Jay

Two authentic musicians collaborating together doesn’t automatically yield the best of both worlds. But with their project ‘Armistice‘, francophone musician Beatrice Martin (Coeur de Pirate) and anglo rocker Jay Malinowski (Bedouin Soundclash) prove that things can work out.
Beatrice and Jay first met while recording the Coca-Cola Open Happiness song (click is on your own risk) for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, which probably led to their next collaboration at Bedouin Soundclash’ latest album Light The Horizon. Beatrice takes part on one song, the stunning track Brutal Hearts. The result of their next musical collaboration is this sultry refreshment from the mariachi playgrounds: Armistice. The two Canadians (who became a couple meanwhile, sorry guys!) recorded it with help from hardcore punk band The Bronx, who recorded a mariachi album themselves in 2009 under the alter ego ‘Mariachi El Bronx’.
Armistice makes you feel where you want to be, in love and free. The only thing is: this feeling only lasts five songs long, ’cause sadly that’s all there is on this superb debut.

So many filles (2)

Another quick update, with Beatrice, Rachel and the long lost Lizzy Ling. The latter finally has a new album out, on which she works her Asian magic. Odd songs, with sensual qualities. Really really dig this track:

Lizzy Ling – la fille d’ombre

After a few English collaborations (this one, and this one), Beatrice/CdP reappears with a featured spot on a Omnikrom track. They think a little differently about ‘having a flow’ in Canada, I presume. But CdP’s guestvocals work really well. See the video HERE.

Rachel Des Bois’ (pictured) third album is out. Had not heard from her before, but thanks to this blog’s main pusher FransS she came on my radar. She might be a tad to rockish for most, but this is a very fine song:
