Lianor

Lianor = Igor & Emilie, who make music that links to atmospheric triphop and dreampop from the 90s, as much as it does to 80s synth soundtracks. I first heard the interesting groove of Holictave, from their debut album. Now there’s a new single that is as mysterious & wondrous as that first track.

This is a home session, that kicks off with Holictave

French Synth Pop

J’aime le synth pop francais! So when I read on Instagram that there’s a compilation with mostly obscure synth pop singles from the 1980s, I had to take a listen. There’s only one conclusion: this is some serious synth ! Obscure, sexy, these we’re never real hits and not every song is great, but for the aficionado (like me) this is mouthwatering. Check out this track by Corinne Tell from 1987:

Or this gem, from 1983 by Fabienne Stoko:

Not on Bandcamp, but on YouTube, this disco’ish song by Kelly Way from 1984:

Lysandre

A regular on this blog, Montreal-based singer Lysandre. This is a very nice lovesong, indie-guitars, gorgeous voice(s), and that new wavey synth is really up my alley:

Clariza

New, very beautiful Clariza single:

Yade

Big time sensuality. That’s a song by Björk, but also the bestest way to describe this new single by French singer Yade. Hope there’s a real video soon:

Naima Frank

Sulty soulful sounds from Montréal, by Naima Frank. Third single this year of Naima, the others had a more pop/dancefloor feel. Also nice.

Stella

Stella = Stella Zekri, born in Paris, with a German mom and an Algerian dad. She made a name for herself as a DJ, now more and more as a singer. She is based in Berlin, has producer Ed Longo as a musical compadre, and on the upcoming album with her band she let’s loose afro-carribean influences in her highly danceable music. Love this track:

En Stéréo

New single by En Stéréo, that brought me back to triphop-days of the late nineties, with less electronics, but intensity, groove and sultriness. Try it:

Grand Eugene

Jeremy & Melyssa, the Montreal duo known as Grand Eugene, is back with another very very cool single, a lover’s quarrel set to modern yacht-y rock
