Harder, Better, Continued

Thanks to FS-reader Brad for reminding me that the earlier post on the Daft Punk-covers wasn’t complete. Five years ago The Brassens recorded this brilliant version in the style of Georges Brassens. Later, they changed their bandname to La Pompe Moderne and recorded an EP and a live-album with covers in the stylo of good ol’ Georges. Last year, they disbanded.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger versions

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is probably the best known track by French dance-duo Daft Punk. That’s because it was sampled, covered and Youtube’d (if that’s a word) the most. A few weeks back, I heard the new, very good album by Philippe Uminski. I had heard of him before, as a songwriter (for La Grande Sophie, Calogero and more), I didn’t know that he made an album as Uminski with a garage rockin’ cover of HBFS. Which triggered me to search for more covers. I didn’t find any as good and radical as Uminski’s, but they’re nice nonetheless. I also found a solid cover of Cola Bottle Baby by Edwin Birdsong, the sample-source of HBFS. Of course, Kanye West’s rework is present as well. Enjoy. And dance!

Pop Bâtard XVII: Burn Da Funk

French bootlegger Fissunix, who brought the world indispensable mash-ups like Gangsta Barbapapa, is surely an entrepreneur sauvage – see his website as well. His most daring, dubious and deranged venture to date might well be the fusion of Deep Purple’s 1974 bluntrocker Burn and Gallic house chefs Daft Punk’s 1997 club classic Da Funk. Recommended by FS powerbroker Roy Black with the following words: “Sick, and therefore somehow … erm, contagious.”
